An Eggciting Experiment

Did you know that you can soak the shell OFF of an egg? This super simple experiment takes a little time, but you’ll develop a basic understanding of acids and bases. Take a look at the video, and when you’re ready, check out the instructions below so you can do it yourself at home!

We’ve seen this activity referred to as the Naked Egg experiment, but we just think “eggciting” is more… exciting! We crack ourselves up! Ok, we’re done.

What’s the STEAM?

So, what’s the science behind this experiment? Essentially, an eggshell is composed of calcium carbonate crystals, a base. When soaked in vinegar, an acid, the crystals break down into their separate parts: calcium and carbonate. The carbonate becomes carbon dioxide when it reacts with the vinegar and the calcium is no longer bonded to the carbonate so it floats free.
